How to Take Care of Men Dress Shoes

Tuesday, November 8, 2011

A timeless pair of men dress shoes that is durable yet comfortable will set you back anywhere from $100 to $500. So now that you’ve splurge on that piece of leather beauty, how are you going to get the most out of your investment? With proper care and preventive maintenance, of course! We share with you in this article little trivia when it comes to men dress shoes care 101.

1. Shoe trees

What are shoe trees, you ask? If you have that question in mind, clearly you’ve been neglecting the necessary maintenance care for your dress shoes. So, do them a favour and go to any reputable shoe store today and get this piece of nifty device available at a price of $20. This device works impeccably with all sizes, thanks to the coiled metal spring stem. But, most importantly, it fills out the shoe thus helping the supple leather keep its form. Try not to skimp on the quality of shoe trees and opt for ones made from hard wood, preferably cedar which helps eliminate detrimental moisture and that offensive odour especially after a long day of walking in your dress shoes.

2. Water repellent

Most dress shoes at the store come readily with a layer of water repellent, or so they claim. But for quality ones that come with a hefty price tag that is usually the case. But, as suspected that layer of protection tends to deplete with each wear. So, be sure to habitually reapply a coat of water repellent to the leather on a regular basis but it all boils down to the frequency of usage. This way those fashion statement on your feet can take a beating from elements such as rain and snow.

3. Clean, Condition, Polish

Here comes the most laborious part of dress shoe care and that too is in fact three simple steps. First, remove the grime off the top of your shoes with leather cleaner. A good one will effectively eliminate all traces of dirt, stains and most importantly, residual built-up polish. Secondly, an equally important step of shoe care is conditioning to replace the leather’s natural oils, keeping it soft. It is crucial to note that this should be done right after a good cleaning, when the leather is still slightly moist. Lastly, proceed on to buffing your shoes. You can use either wax, cream or paste polish but avoid liquids at all cost.

4. Protective soles

For that amount of money you’re shelving out for a good, high quality pair of leather shoes, chances are you’re also paying through your nose for leather soles. For me, personally, it is a pain to see the most vulnerable part –the soles of my favourite pair wear through the elements and with leather soles that pain turns into agony. So, why not add a rubber sole protector to lessen the impact of constant abuse? Stylishly thin, these rubber soles cost about $1 each, truly putting them at the front line of defence for your dress shoes.

5. Avoid heat

It is a huge mistake to dry out leather shoes with direct heat, a sin equivalent to murdering that exquisitely hand crafted piece of leather artistry. Yet, most men have committed such crime. Leather should always dry under natural circumstances. Never, I repeat never, overheat it by placing them near an open fire or stove. This will literally cook the leather, robbing it so intensely of moisture that it turns brittle.

Give your men dress shoe a little pampering once in a while to keep it even more durable and lasting.

Man Fashion: Essential Men Fashion Tips

Sunday, October 25, 2009

There are as many dos and don'ts in fashion as there are brands, and it can be overwhelming! Some man fashion tips are more important than others and many can be ignored without making major fashion gaffes.
So let us go back to 5 essential Man Fashion Tips:-

1. Don't Be Afraid to Play With Color

While you try to color coordinate your shoes with your belt or your socks with your pants, you don’t have to make your entire outfit match. Show off your personality by using color in your shirts and ties. Today’s neck ties come in a variety of colors and patterns. You can add a punch of class to any plain suit with a crisp red neck tie.

If you want a more playful look, try a tie with polka dots or stripes. Striking without being overwhelming, a colored necktie is the perfect way to inject color and personality into your outfit and lifestyle.

2. DO Wear Socks that Match Your Pants

If you are wearing black trousers, avoid white socks, unless you are superstar like Micheal Jackson. There is nothing worse than a man in a nice black suit who sits down only to reveal pristine white socks. It does not matter whether you wear socks that are solid colors or patterns as long as the color of the socks matches your pants.

3. DO Wear a Watch

As discussed in my previous post, watch is a wonderful fashion accessory, so you will look classy and sophisticated with a watch. You don’t have to be wealthy to afford a nice, classy watch. You can find a variety of beautiful watches for very reasonable prices in most department stores.

4. Do Try Out Flat-Front Trousers

Most men avoid pants that are made with a flat-front. Our fathers and grandfathers all wore the traditional pleated trousers so we often automatically assume that we should wear the same. This is a big mistake! In fact, pleats can be a disaster if a man is overweight. They only make you look bulkier when you are trying to look slim and trim. Give flat-front trousers a try and you will be amazed at how much better you look. If you feel uncomfortable in flat-front trousers, try buying a larger size and getting them tailored to fit your waist better.

5. DO Match Your Shoes with Your Belt

This is most basic rule of men’s fashion. You can tie together even the most awkward outfits by matching your shoes with your belt. Stick with neutral colors such as brown, charcoal and black. These colors can be worn with virtually anything, from business suits to casual blue jeans.
Coordinate the color of your belt with the color of your shoes. Lastly, while belts add a polished look to your ensemble. Make sure, however, not to fasten it too tight.

In a time when most large shoe brands, such as Timberland, Nike, Reabok have outsourced their labor, a handful of boutique shoe craftsmen have remain committed to the quality and care of an expert touch. Man Dress Shoes: Back to Basics

Sunday, March 1, 2009

If you are a businessman or someone who has to wear dress shoes in your place of employment it is necessary to have at least a couple of pairs of quality footwear. Like women, men are more and more concern about their choice of dress shoes and tend to find the right pair of shoes. So before you decide your pair of shoes, let go back to basic.

I think the great bulk of dress, or "business" shoes fit snugly into two broad categories.

Oxfords

Oxfords are any lace-up men's dress shoes that don't rise above the ankle. Of course, within the Oxford category, there are many varieties, both structural and stylistic.

Open-laced (Bluchers) oxfords have the sides of the shoe sewn on top of the front part. When laced, the shoe looks like it's built out in segments. Front, top, side, back, etc.

Close-laced (Balmorals) oxfords are drawn together by laces sewn under the front part of the shoe and then closed over its tongue. The result is a shoe that looks as if it's made from one piece of leather.

Some oxfords have a separate piece of leather on the shoe's toe (also known as a "cap toe"). This leather may be plain or decorated with brogueing (leather embroidery).

"Saddle" oxfords have a saddle-shaped piece of leather of a different color, or leather type, over the shoe's instep.

"Kilties" are oxfords with a tongue of fringed leather that is draped over the instep to cover the shoe's laces and eyelets.

The "wingtip" is arguably the most common of all oxfords. This footwear features toe brogueing that resembles a bird with its wings spread.

When it comes to your oxfords, never settle for anything less than genuine leather. And no matter the structural design or the style of the leather finish, when worn in black, all oxford styles match with business suits.

Black, leather, close-laced oxfords, however, are the more formal dress shoe. They work especially well with pinstriped suits and double-breasted suits. If brown, they can be worn with tweed suits and sport jackets.

When worn in brown or oxblood, open-laced oxfords match with everything from jeans and khakis, to light suits and sports coats.

Loafers (Slip-On)

All loafers are marked by a low-cut, a broad, moccasin-type top, and a wide, flat heel.

As with oxfords, there are several varieties of loafer: penny loafer, moccasin, monk strap (buckle), tassel, etc.

Unlike oxfords, however, loafers don't automatically look good on all men.
Younger men might want to approach brown monk straps with caution, as those are more common among middle-aged guys. That said, a black monk strap looks quite good on the dance floor.

The classic Gucci or Prada moccasin-style loafer has been worn by business professionals for a while now, but it also looks good with jeans for a night out clubbing. Many young fashion mavens consider these dress shoes a basic necessity.

Penny loafers are casual, and perfect for khaki-and-blazer outfits. Although originally a favorite among younger demographics, they're now largely the province of older men.

Penny loafers and suede moccasins, however, are the only "dress" shoes that can successfully be worn with shorts and a polo shirt.

Lastly, here are some tips for buying, wearing, and caring for 2009 dress shoes:-
  • Protect your dressier shoes from rain/mud/snow by wearing overshoes (rubber protectors).
  • Invest in shoe trees.
  • Black shoes go with black, gray and navy clothes.
  • Brown shoes go with earth tones.
  • Burgundy (oxblood) shoes go with just about all men's colors.

Men Dates: What Shoes Have to Say about Men?

Saturday, January 24, 2009

Guys, just wanna share something interesting with you today. I came across an interesting article on shoes, ie. How Men shoes Really Tell about His True Love Potential by Donna Sozio. She commented that the shoes a man wears and the way that he treats them are fail-safe indicators of not only his romantic personality, but also how he'll treat his woman. For some insight into what your shoes say about your true character and relationship style, check out Sozio's guide below:

If you're wearing alligator loafers… What would you naturally do if an alligator came towards you when you were on a date? Take that response and apply it to how you should approach this guy, says Sozio. "Alligators are opportunistic eaters; they crouch down until their victim isn't looking, and then they pounce, and so will a guy wearing alligator shoes," she warns. These guys are dangerous, so pay attention when you're with them, Sozio recommends. "Be on high alert around these guys," she advises. "Because they tend to be sneaky and secretive."

If you're wearing hiking boots… Sozio says that a man who wears Timberland hiking boots on a date when dinner — not an outdoorsy activity — is the type of person who wants to feel like he could be on a mountain in eight seconds if he wanted to, regardless of where he was. "This guy is someone who is impulsively adventurous, so he's looking for a woman who won't make him feel restrained," she explains. "As long as you don't make him feel tied down, he will be a loyal partner."

If you're wearing high-end designer shoes Guys who sport this season's Gucci driving moccasins and Prada boots may very well be what Sozio calls "collectors." "This type of guy not only collects name-brand shoes, but also name-brand, 'trophy'-esque women, too," she explains. Because these men likely see women as boast-worthy accessories and not real people, Sozio notes that they most likely won't spend the time or effort required for nurturing a relationship.

If you're wearing men's sandals… Unless you live by the beach, Sozio remarks that a man who wears men's sandals — commonly referred to as "mandals" — is confused. "This guy is caught somewhere between being Mr. Laid-back Surfer Dude and Mr. Corporate America," she explains. "He wants to be open and free, but doesn't quite know how to do so." In many ways, this man is not where he wants to be, she says, so be careful of becoming his transitional or in-between girlfriend.

If you're wearing trendy sneakers… A man who rocks a colorful pair of Adidas is someone who prides himself on being well put-together, urban and cool, says Sozio. "Even if he pairs these sneakers with a blazer, this guy wants you to know he likes to keep things casual," she asserts. This man is a creative, independent thinker, which Sozio cautions may mean that he will be hard to pin down. "If you're interested in impressing this guy, create an atmosphere where he can be in a relationship with you, yet feel independent at the same time," she advises.

If you're wearing suede bucks… When evaluating a man wearing these preppy classics, you must first consider his age. "These are 'old man' shoes," explains Sozio. "If a young guy is wearing them, it likely indicates that he's sort of an old guy at heart; he'll be somewhat conservative and perhaps a little stodgy, never deviating from what traditional society wants him to do." If he's an older man donning these reliable mainstays, however, this could be a simple sign that's he's a solid, dependable man who would make a loyal partner.

If you're wearing a worn-out pair of sneakers… A guy who shows up for a date wearing a disheveled pair of sneakers shows no respect for himself or you, Sozio says. "You have to wonder how a guy who doesn't care enough to present himself well at a first meeting will treat you as you continue to get to know him," she cautions. "Don't think this guy is simply trying to be casually cool—casually cool can come in the form of spiffy, well-maintained athletic shoes," she notes. "A man who picks you up wearing ratty footwear isn't interested in showing you his best or the respect you deserve." So you guys need to take note of this "serious" comment.

Man Fashion for First Date

Thursday, July 3, 2008

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. How true that old saying is. Unfortunately, many men don’t seem to care what impression they make. That, or they’re just totally oblivious to the importance of how a woman perceives you in those first moments upon meeting.

And it really is just those first few moments. Miss out on those, and you might miss the boat altogether. Don’t worry, I’m not telling you to change yourself, or change your style. I’m telling you to make a good first impression. If you can do that, the second impression can be whatever you want. (Within reason, of course.)

NO HATS

Unless you’re a teenager, or want to be equated to one, leave the baseball hats, kangos, derbies, etc at home. Not only do they detract from your appearance, they tell a woman you’re insecure. No, she probably won’t consciously be thinking that last one, but she’ll be feeling it on the inside, cos woman are naturally intuitive. People hide behind hats. Women don’t want a man who hides, they want a man who’s confident and isn’t afraid to show himself. And don’t leave me a comment telling me you wear hats all the time, and it’s unrelated to insecurity. If you wear one on a first date, it most certainly is.

NO SUNGLASSES

Eye contact is extremely important when flirting with someone you’re interested in. Covering your eyes the whole time only tells that person you have something to hide. And, as with the hats, tells them you’re insecure about something. If you’re outside, fine, wear them. But if she wants to talk to you face to face, slide them on top of your head (this tends to look pretty sexy, anyway) and look her in the eye. This tells her subconscious you value the conversation enough to make the effort, and it tells her you’re willing to focus on her. And for God’s sake, do not wear them indoors.

DRESS FOR THE OCCASION

In other words, don’t over or under-dress. If you’re just going to the movies, you don’t need to be decked out in a leisure suit. If you’re going to a Broadway show, you could stand to wear something nicer than your ratty jeans and a pair of old Chucks. No matter what, though, your date is not going to want to feel like she’s out with a slob. Nor is she going to want to feel like she’s out with the singer in a glam rock band. Dress for the occasion, because she certainly will.

SHINE YOUR SHOES

You don’t need to visit the shoe-shine boy at the local train station, but you should clean your shoes before you meet up with your date. It’s unlikely she’s going to consciously scope out your shoes, but if they’re covered in crud, she’s going to notice. Women don’t expect men to be pristine, but we do want to know you take care of yourself to some degree. If your shoes are filthy, her subconscious is going to wonder what else might be.

NO WRINKLES

You don’t have to press your t-shirts or jeans – but don’t show up in clothes that look like they’ve been sitting on your closet floor for a week. Yeah, they might be clean, but if they’re wrinkled, they don’t look it. So don’t assume that she’s going to assume they are. Even just running them through a dryer for a few minutes to get the wrinkles out is better than nothing.

You don’t have to dress like a fashion model – and most of us would be a little worried if you put too much thought into your appearance - but it would be nice if you at least cleaned yourselves up before a date!

Man Fashion Tips: Fashion for Short Man

Thursday, March 13, 2008

If you are looking for a list of "Fashion Tips" for the shorter man. You are at the right place today. We live in a physical world and we judge each other, to some degree, by the way we look. Our appearance is obviously very much affected by the clothes that we are wearing. So far I shared some fashion tips for bulky and skinny men. Today, I thought of sharing some of fashion tips for shorter man.
  • A Proper Fit is the Key
Above all, it's important that your clothes fit well. Looser garments can make you look stumpy, so opt for a fit that is trim rather than baggy.
  • Wear just One Color
So remember to wear a shirt and pants in the same color, which will prevent obvious breaks in your natural frame, and as a result can produce the illusion of height you want!
  • Opt for Dark Shades and Light Fabrics
You probably might not know, dark color , especially black, tend to have a slimming effect, and help shorter men seem more elongated. Same goes to light or medium weight fabrics. Heavy fabrics, tend to make you look bulkier and shorter.
  • Vertical Stripes
Again and again, vertical stripes apply to shorter man as well. So any shirts, sweater, pants, that elongates your heights is good thing.
  • Opt for Square-toed Dress Shoes
Don't be surprise that shoes do make a different. So if you are short person, square-toe shoes are the best for you. Never thought of pointy-toe shoes anymore, this kind of shoes only work well to taller men.
  • Wear Heels on your Dress Shoes
This is the simplest and direct method to increase height
  • Avoid Big Prints
On smaller bodies, giant prints will overwhelm. So please keep those prints proportionate to your body.

So remember, there are always some ways out even if you are short. As long as you got the right fashion match, you are still able to dress with styles.

Lastly, all these tips not only applies to men, it also applicable to lady.

Man Fashion: 8 Fashion Tips for Skinny Men

Saturday, March 1, 2008

Alright, after my earlier post on fashion tips for bulky man, some of you might wonder whether is there any tips for skinny man, especially if you are skinny as well as tall. So after some researches, here are some of the simple tips for the tall and skinny man.

Choose Fitted Shirts
Loose fitting, un-tucked shirts will billow around you and make you look the mainsail on a mast. So make sure to choose something fitted. On the other hand, you should avoid extreme tight shirts because they will accentuate your bony upper half.

Avoid Monochromatic Looks
If you wear a solid color from head to toe, you will seem even thinner than you are. So break up your look by wearing few different colors in your outfit

Select Lighter Color
Lighter colors will make you appear slightly larger, so choose white, creams, light gray, light blue to visually bulk you up a bit.

Don't Wear vertical Stripes
As in my earlier article, vertical stripes only suitable for bulky person, if you are skinny, vertical stripes will make you even thinner.

Round-Toed Shoes
Alright, what round-toed shoes got to do with this? If you are really tall, round toe shoes will make you look disproportionate. So go for square-toed or pointy shoes in order to balance out your shape.

Skinny Jeans
Stay away from this kind of jeans. You pants should have a classic cut and should remain simple. A straight cut or boot cut jeans with long inseam will also flatter your best.

Short Jackets
Make sure all your jackets fall right under your buttocks. A shorter jacket will emphasis your height as well as your skinny waist, arms and legs.

Other Tip:
To avoid looking like a lollipop, don't wear blazers or jackets with big shoulder pads.

Dress Shoes: Reveal the Secret of Your Personality

Sunday, December 30, 2007

It might sound a bit corny, but the saying: You can tell a man by the shoes he wears, is very apt, it really is. It's as predictable as being able to tell how someone lives by their life indoors by their garden outdoors. Men might be better groomed today than at any time in the past but when it comes to shoes, many of them still haven't got a clue! There's nothing a woman likes to see more than a well groomed man, and that goes for hair, nails, and general attire, and that includes his footwear. Putting a scruffy and unkempt pair of shoes onto a clean and otherwise well spruced body from the ankles up, will mean that all that hard work into looking good has gone out of the window! Man dress shoes should be considered and extension to the feet. It's a mistake to think that the location of the feet will mean the shoes go unnoticed. So every man's wardrobe should include these basic dress shoe colors, as highlighted in my earlier post, black and brown along with a selection outside the basic color dress shoe for those "special occasions". As I mentioned in my earlier post, many folks skimp on quality footwear due to the price, but the high quality man dress shoes are eventually going to be more cost efficient than the cheap poor quality ones as they are simply not made to last.

How to Look For Your Perfect Fashion Dress Shoes?

Friday, December 28, 2007

Unlike women dress shoes, man shoes normally design with simplicity in mind. Hence, a pair of men fashion dress shoes normally will not out of fashion so quickly. Regardless, there are some factors that you need to keep in mind that will not only make your selection criteria easier but also help to insure that you get the right footwear.
  • Style and Fashion
The most important criteria during your selection process will be style and fashion of course. One obvious will be the color, the basics that every man should needs are the standard black and brown. Another color that you might want to consider is burgundy, which goes well with many different colors of khaki pants.

Within the dress shoe genre there are casual dress shoes that are really more like fancy moccasins and more elegant dress shoes made of elaborate exotic skins. Depend on what occasion and your dress code, you wouldn’t want to wear a casual dress shoes to attend a gala dinner at a 5 stars hotel ballroom. In short, your fashion dress shoes should be dressy depending upon what you wear with them and the occasion you are going to attend.

  • Durability
Men dress shoes details are the foundation in building and shaping the durability of dress shoes. It provides the comfort and firmness within that men are always sensitive about. So let go through some of the basic features.

Most men dress shoes are made of leather. It is important to know what constitutes good leather since this material covers about 80 – 90% of the dress shoe. Generally, base on layman’s sight and touch, we focus on a smooth with consistent fine grain on the leather for men fashion dress shoes details. The leather should feel rich and supple. Still it is difficult for any layman to assess the quality of leather unless you really know leather very well.

Hence, instead of trying to focus 100% on the leather itself, it should put some attention on the construction of the men fashion dress shoes such as lining, stitching, soles and heels.

Believe me, I would suggest you rather spend a little more money upfront for a good pair of shoes that will last several years than to pay $20 or $30 bucks for shoes that won't last one year or less.

  • Frequency
The frequency of shoes is going to be used is very important criteria in the selection process. Shoes that are worn infrequently don't necessarily need to be held to the same standards as those that are worn on a daily basis. For example, if you are wearing shoes that are only for seasonal formal occasions they might not necessary to be as comfortable or durable as if you were wearing them every day.

In other word, the biggest consideration in shoes that are worn daily should be support to give you comfort and prevent injury.

Lastly, whatever you choose be sure they are comfortable and durable so that they will feel good and last a long time.
